Glamour Continuing Theme in Celebrity Fashion

By Karen Lawson
Fashion Design School Review Columnist

America is fascinated by celebrities and their fashion choices. The fashion police and paparazzi record every alleged faux pas, and fashion commentators lavish praise on those deemed “best dressed.” A common denominator in many best dressed lists is the ongoing presence of elegant gowns and cocktail dresses. Graceful ensembles embellished with beads and sequins, classically draped gowns, and plenty of diamonds provide celebrities with an aura of elegance.

Fashion Styling from Top to Toe

An important concept of successful fashion design and styling is achieving a total look. This doesn’t mean that your shoes and bag have to match, or that you’re dressed in one pattern or color. Fashion designers and stylists work with clients to design and assemble a total fashion “package” that complements their clients’ appearance and personality.

And in spite of edgy trends and very revealing outfits, many celebrities opt for more classic styles associated with 1940’s and 1950’s fashion. Some even wear vintage couture accessorized with vintage jewelry.

Learning the Tricks of the Fashion Trade

If you’re fascinated by fashion design and how stylists put together entire fashion looks, a fashion design school can help you start a career as a fashion designer or stylist. In a fashion design program, you’ll learn about:

  • basic design and drawing
  • computer-assisted design (CAD)
  • textiles
  • basic principles of texture, color, and design
  • fashion trends throughout history

You’ll also learn how to bring your designs from sketchpad to finished garment, and develop a portfolio to show future clients.

A fashion design school degree can lead to a variety of careers, including fashion designer, retail careers, fashion stylist, and costume and wardrobe specialists for the entertainment industry. As long as there are glamorous celebrities, there will be a place for fashion design.
