Versace did it. So did Gucci. So did Women’s Wear Daily, and Vogue.
Besides create, propel, review, and market fashion designs, these different players in the industry have also created successful fashion Web sites.
Fashion Online
Creating a fashion Web site is a great career move for young designers looking to get their start, or for seasoned ones to make a change. Paying for space on the Internet is far less than paying for rental space in a dense urban area, after all.
Some designers already have their Web sites. Ms. Ebony Frost (even her name is fashion-conscious), after attending fashion school, wanted a way for fellow fashion graduates and current students to market their original designs.
So she created her own Web site, on which to showcase her own designs, and the designs of other fashion students and graduates.
Online Fashion Industry Growth
British fashion designer Dorothy Perkins, along with several colleagues in the industry, has done the same. Her site also offers fashions at budget prices, but on a larger scale. She plans to feature more than 100 fashion brand names on her site. Advertising will keep the site afloat to start, until profits take over.
Like other major industries, fashion design is building a strong presence online, and it isn’t limited to fashion houses or magazines. Even fashion schools have established online learning programs.
Fashion school is a great place to learn the business and marketing side of fashion, giving you the background to make a project like a website a success. Fashion school classes will focus on producing, merchandising, marketing, and selling your designs. It may not be a must for a career in fashion, but it is a good alternative to a store if you are interested in selling your own designs.
