The apparel industry did over 173 billion dollars of business in 2004. Fashion designers are the creative force behind all of those zeroes.
Fashion Happens
Fashion happens when the style of a piece of clothing surpasses that piece's function. For example, when you slip on a pair of jeans in the morning, you probably aren't planning to irrigate a field or head down into a coal mine. Yet, that is what jeans were created for. Fashion, however, is much more than designer jeans and outrageously expensive tank tops. Fashion design is a broad field, and the field of clothing and textile manufacturing is even broader.
The Art of Fashion Design
Fashion designers must have a strong art background and be able to sketch their designs. You must be able to create patterns and sample garments. You must have an in-depth knowledge of fabrics and textiles.
You should have basic sewing and tailoring skills, including alteration and finishing. Most importantly, you must stay abreast of the market trends, knowing the latest fashions, fabrics, and tastes.
Profit by Design
It takes more than creative genius to make it in the fashion industry. Fashion designers often plan the production and marketing of their work. You must have the knowledge of what will sell for profit in a specific market. You must also set prices and know the intended demographic for your product. You must be able to network, and manage the press. Fashion is a competitive industry, and you must always be a step ahead of the competition.
The fashion industry is growing, as is the demand for fashion designers. Check our site each week for more articles in our series on fashion design.
