Business Casual Clothing Presents Challenges in Fashion Design

By Karen Lawson
Fashion Design School Review Columnist

Forget the high fashion runways. For most of us, what’s in our wardrobes isn’t dictated by what celebrities wear on the red carpet, but instead by our need for practical and attractive fashion for the workplace. The fashion design industry strives to meet customer’s needs for appropriate work wear, while producing clothing that is aesthetically appealing.

America’s taste for casual fashion increasingly influences what we wear to work, but traditional business practices require workplace fashion that is casual, yet appropriate for work.

Ditch the Ultra Low Rise Jeans: Fashion Meets the Business World

Business casual clothing has evolved into a fashion category of its own. You may be able to dress down on Friday, which means that you don’t have to wear a suit, but your boss will likely not be happy if you show up in low rise jeans and a midriff top. If you’re interested in fashion design, you may want to consider the problem of how to design business casual clothing that has an edge without being offensive or inappropriate in conservative business settings.

More than Chinos: Self Expression through Fashion

Business professionals who enjoy fashion want more casual wardrobe choices than chino slacks and linen blazers. Innovative fabrics such as washable suede and ethnic inspired texture and prints can contribute to workplace expressions of individualism without going over the top. Of course, accessories can enhance your overall business casual look. A signature bag or watch can lend a touch of individual style while helping you avoid raised eyebrows in the boardroom. As more businesses adopt casual dress policies, fashion design companies must meet the needs of working professionals.
