A Degree for the Business of Fashion

By Joe Cooper
Fashion Design School Review Columnist

A degree in fashion retail management prepares students for careers in fashion management at various types of companies, including clothing manufacturers, retail establishments, fashion houses, and more. Building the background you need in marketing, accounting, operations, and other business concepts can be the start of a great career in retail management.

The Business of Fashion

Fashion design is a $200 billion industry. Do you think it’s comprised of only clothing designers? Fashion is as much in need of business managers as it is of new clothing designs. And there is a fashion degree perfectly suited for a career in this field.

Earning a bachelor’s degree in fashion retail management is good preparation for a career as a manager in a business setting within the fashion industry. You probably won’t find yourself in a design studio cutting fabric too often. You may, however, find yourself managing a staff of many in a retail company, chain, fashion house, or other fashion company.

Fashion Management Classes

Classes in a fashion retail management degree program will look something like this:

  • Fashion and retail industry trends
  • Manufacturing
  • Operations
  • Business management
  • Compliance
  • Marketing Advertising

This fashion degree program builds backgrounds in accounting and resource management concepts. The industry needs educated professionals to make business decisions regarding product lines, shipments, new launches, marketing campaigns, and more.

After School

After graduating from a fashion degree program in retail management, you will be looking at a wide array of job possibilities. Any fashion retail store is a potential employer. Earning such a versatile degree will reward itself.
